Maintain, Preserve, and Stewardship Through Collaboration
The City of San Diego’s Nonprofit Partner Dedicated to the Care and Enhancement of the La Jolla Coastal Area
Ellen Browning Scripps Park
The Time is Now! These Parks Need Our Support.
Scripps Park
The ‘Seaside Crown Jewel’ has much deferred maintenance, including much of the lawn and general landscape. Also, the stairs to beach access at the Cove Beach and to Shell Beach are all failing and in disrepair. One of the Belvederes is closed off. Additionally, the trees and shrubbery in the historic park all need extensive new care. This favorite world-wide destination is at the top for our plans to comprehensively rejuvenate and repair for all to continue to enjoy.
Coast Walk Trail
All along the .6 mile scenic trail area requires constant vegetation and weed management. The trail is constantly being groomed and repaired as erosion and storm runoff takes its toll. The historically designated Bridge is about to undergo and thorough rebuild.
Children’s Pool
The Children’s Pool was built in 1931, and is now a home to both people and seals. Its in a dire need for repairs to last for the next 100 years. The seawall railing had emergency repairs last year, but the wall itself and the area around it is crumbling away. The landscaping all around the plaza area is dead or non-existent.

Urban parks play a critical role in cities around the globe, improving people’s mental and physical health. They contribute to biodiversity, provide space for people to gather and enjoy nature, allow people to explore diverse cultures and histories, and provide many opportunities for outdoor recreation.
Ensuring access to exceptional parks, now and into the future, requires a shared responsibility and a commitment of resources. Your tax-deductible donation and stewardship makes that difference!
La Jolla shoreline parks are an exceptional resource for our region’s residents and a tremendous asset for San Diego’s economic development. The area’s coastal future depends on continuing to grow public support for the parks through volunteerism, philanthropy, and advocacy. Providing equitable park access and inclusive experiences for regional and international visitors alike will build the parks’, and our City’s, international reputation.

About Us
The La Jolla Coastal Conservancy, Inc. is a newly formed nonprofit for public benefit (IRS 501(c)(3) status pending), and all donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law. The Conservancy is dedicated to preserving and enhancing La Jolla’s iconic shoreline parks that includes the 1.5 mile coastal length of Scripps Park, Coast Walk Trail, and the Children’s Pool areas.
These vital public spaces face over $500K in annual maintenance needs and $30M in capital projects over the next decade; all the while the City of San Diego is reducing park funding. With the Conservancy now in a special Public/Private Partnership agreement with the City, the Conservancy offers a sustainable, community-driven solution to protect these natural, cultural, and economic assets for generations to come.
The partnership agreement with the City incudes the Conservancy’s currently permitted areas of Coast Walk Trail at the north end, and southward to Scripps Park and Children’s Pool, and Whale View Point area at the southerly end.
Many examples of the decades of the City’s deferred maintenance and failing infrastructure repair are around us, and have led to much closing and restriction of public access to the shoreline. Read more on our efforts here…
